Primary antibodies against NHE3 or -actin. The monoclonal anti-NHE3 antibody was directed against the C-terminal 131 aa of rabbit NHE3 41 ; , and -actin monoclonal antibodies were purchased from Alpha Diagnostics San Antonio, TX ; . The secondary antibody was an antirabbit immunoglobulin G IgG ; conjugated to horseradish peroxidase GIBCO BRL, Gaithersburg, Md. ; , which was visualized using chemiluminescence SuperSignal Substrate, Pierce ; and captured on light-sensitive imaging film Kodak ; . Bands corresponding to NHE3 and -actin proteins were quantified by densitometric analysis UN-SCAN-IT gel software, Silk Scientific, Inc., Orem, Utah, USA ; and were expressed as percentages of control. The equity in protein loading in all blots was verified by gel staining using Coomassie brilliant blue R-250 Bio-Rad, Hercules, CA, USA ; . Materials. The fluorescent dye BCECF acetomethyl ester was obtained from Invitrogen Carlsbad, CA ; . Tetrodotoxin was obtained from Biomol International L.P. Plymouth Meeting, PA ; . All other materials were obtained from either Sigma Aldrich St. Louis, MO ; or Fisher Scientific Springfield, NJ ; . Statistics. All values were reported as mean SEM. Data between two treatment groups was compared using a 2-tailed unpaired Student t-test assuming equal variances between groups. A probability value of p 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Bone mineral density was performed by dual x-ray absorptiometry initially with a QDR-1000 and later with a QDR-1000W bone densitometer Hologic, Inc., Waltham, MA ; see below ; . Each patient had a baseline measurement of the lumbar spine Ll-L4 ; in duplicate with repositioning during the month before treatment initiation, with subsequent measurements at 12, 52, 76, and 104 weeks. When an individual's bone density was noted to be different from her baseline value by greater than or equal to 5%, duplicate measurements were obtained. The in viva reproducibility of our dual x-ray absorptiometry determinations of the spine in this study was 0.68 + 0.06% n 108 scans with repositioning ; . Based on this reproducibility, a change in bone density of greater than 2% should be detectable with two measurements 9 ; . Over the course of the study, one stepwise change within 0.5% of the anthropomorphic spine phantom bone mineral content was introduced by a necessary service repair. The integrated in vitro reproducibility of our spine phantom was 0.50% n 832 ; during the entire study. Due to careful cross-calibration, no stepwise change was introduced when our QDR-1000 bone densitometer was upgraded to a QDR-1000W. Bone mineral density data are presented as grams per cm'.
| Thou son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt upon their own ground, they defiled themselves with their own * waies and imaginations: so that in my sight their way was like the uncleanness of a menstruous woman. Wherefore I poured my wrothfull displeasure upon them, because of the blood that they had shed in the land, and because of their Idols, wherewith they had defiled themselves. I scattered them also among the Heathen, so that they were strewed about in the lands. According to their ways and after their own inventions, so did I punish them. Now when they were gone unto the Heathen, and come in among them they dishonored my holy name: so that it was said of them: Are these the people of God, and must go out of their own land? Then spared I my holy name, which the house of Israel had dishonored among the Gentiles, to whom they came. Therefore tell the house of Israell: Thus saith the Lord God: I do not this for your sakes O house of Israel ; but for my holy names sake, which ye have dishonored among the Heathen, they came to them. Therefore I will hallow my great name again, which among the Gentiles is evil spoken of: for ye yourselves have dishonored it among them. And the Gentiles shall know that I the Lord, when I honored in you before their eyes, sayeth the Lord God. As for you, I will take you from among the Heathen, and gather you together out of all countries, and bring you again into your own land. Then I will pour clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: yee from all your uncleanness and from all your Idols shall I clean you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put in you: As for that stoney heart, I will take it out of your body, and give you a fleshly.
Three studies on rabbits one in vitro and two in vivo ; and one in vivo study on swine were performed to study the effect of Abraxane preventing cell proliferation in other rapidly dividing cell populations using in-stent restenosis as a model. The submitted documentation shows that administration of a single dose of Abraxane with balloon-injured arteries resulted in a lack of endothelial healing and delayed replacement of intimal cells. Secondary pharmacodynamics and acamprosate.
Most of the adverse pulmonary effects exerted by -adrenoceptor-blocking drugs in asthma or COPD patients are related to interference with 2-adrenoceptor-mediated bronchodilation. Various studies1318 have identified relevant differences in the impact on airway function, depending on whether a -blocker is 1-selective or 1-nonselective. For example, Ellis et al14 compared the effect of three doses 50, 100, and 200 mg ; of atenolol, a selective 1-adrenoceptor-blocking drug, and one dose 40 mg ; of propranolol on the airways of 10 asthmatic patients. Two hours after drug administration, the three doses of atenolol were significantly less effective than propranolol in 2-blocking, as shown by a smaller FEV1 decrease. Moreover, the isoprenaline FEV1 dose-response curves gradually shifted to the right of the placebo curve with increasing doses of atenolol, and the greatest displacement was observed with propranolol. Also 1-selective receptor blockers can adversely affect airways at therapeutic oral doses. For example, a 3-week course of atenolol, 100 mg once daily, or metoprolol, 100 mg twice daily, was effective in reducing BP in 14 hypertensive patients with asthma.18 However, atenolol caused significantly less bronchospasm than metoprolol, less frequent sensations of moderately severe to very severe wheeziness, and more asthma-free days, and had less effect on the evening peak expiratory flow rate PEFR ; . This finding suggests that the true clinical relevance of 1-adrenoceptor selectivity be re-examined. All selective 1-adrenoceptor antagonists block.
| ABSTRACT The effects of long-term cold exposure on brown adipose tissue BAT ; thermogenesis in hypothyroid rats have been examined. The thyroid ablation was performed in normal rats after two months of exposure to 4C, when BAT hyperthrophy and thermogenic activity were maximal. Following ablation, hypothyroid and normal controls remained in the cold for 2 additional months. At the end of 4-month cold exposure, all untreated hypothyroid rats were alive, had normal body temperature and gained an average 12.8% more weight that normal controls. Long-term cold exposure of hypothyroid rats markedly increased BAT weight, mitochondrial proteins, UCP1, mRNA for UCP1 and oxygen consumption to levels similar to those seen in cold-exposed normal rats. The results indicate that thyroid hormones are required for increased thermogenic capacity to occur as an adaptation to long-term cold exposure. However, cold adaptation can be maintained in the absence of thyroid hormone and acebutolol.
Contact lines at surface heterogeneities, the origin of contact angle hysteresis, is a major obstacle in micro- and nanofluidic systems involving moving three-phase contact lines giving rise to finite threshold forces. We studied the contact angle hysteresis of aqueous drops on various polymer surfaces in the presence of electric fields in an electrowetting configuration. We demonstrate the contact angle hysteresis decreases linearly with the electrostatic force applied to the contact line in the case of AC voltage at frequencies in the kHz range. In contrast, the hysteresis is essentially unaffected by a DC voltage giving rise to the same decrease in contact angle. The experimental observation is explained in terms of an instantaneous balance of surface tension forces, pinning forces, and time-dependent electrostatic forces at the contact line. To illustrate the power of the effect, we demonstrate that the threshold force required for actuating drops sandwiched between two parallel surface indeed almost vanishes for sufficiently high AC voltage.

Four per cent of our cohort of incident Parkinson's disease cases had more than two rst-degree relatives with features of parkinsonism as reported by the proband, although if we include second-degree relatives 20% of our incident cohort have a family history of the disease Table 6 ; . Only one of our incident Parkinson's disease patients was diagnosed below the age of 40 years, suggesting that young onset forms of the disease are, in fact, very rare. Given that it is this group that has the highest risk of carrying parkin-related disease Lucking et al., 2000 ; , our study is unlikely to be inuenced by inclusion of parkin-related cases. In this population-based cohort of incident Parkinson's disease patients, 36% performed poorly in at least one of three cognitive tasks. Follow-up of prevalent cases has estimated that between 20% Brown and Marsden, 1984 ; and 75!

Health effects are often experienced following a sequence of events. Migration of the landfill gas from the site into areas near or in contact with people results in external exposure. Absorption of the landfill gas contaminants into the body by inhalation, ingestion or movement through the skin leads to internal exposure. Finally, the interaction of the absorbed compound with and actimmune.
Statistical Analysis The data were analyzed by computing the KruskalWallis statistic to avoid assumptions regarding the distribution of the data. Differences between groups were isolated by the Mann-Whitney rank sum test with Bonferroni adjustment for multiple comparisons. Passive pressure-volume curves were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance. A plot of log pressure versus mean volumes was constructed for each group to evaluate the slope that defines chamber stiffness for the pressure-volume relation of each group. Various intervals were tested for linearity by the method of least squares and evaluated by an F statistic. When the best linear segment was found, the slope and y intercept was calculated and stripped from the remaining curve by the method of residuals.1" The process was repeated until all data points could be predicted by a series of exponentials. Chamber stiffness constants of the four groups were compared by an analysis of covariance.

PCBs were inadequately tested in mice for induction of skin tumours [ref: 16, 17]. In several studies, oral or intraperitoneal administration of PCBs enhanced the incidences of preneoplatic lesions [ref: 18-20] and of neoplasms [ref: 21, 22] of the liver induced in rats by N-nitrosodiethylamine or 2acetylaminofluorene. In one study, intragastric administration of PCBs to mice increased the incidence of lung tumours induced by intraperitoneal administration of N-nitrosodimethylamine [ref: 23]. C. Other relevant data No data were available on the genetic and related effects of PCBs in humans. Dominant lethal effects were not induced in rats administered PCBs orally, but were produced in rats nursed by females that had received PCBs orally. PCBs did not induce chromosomal aberrations in bone-marrow cells or spermatagonia of rats treated in vivo; micronuclei were not induced in bonemarrow cells of mice in one study, while equivocal results were obtained in a second study in which the PCBs were administered in corn oil. They did not transform Syrian hamster embryo cells in vitro. PCBs induced DNA strand breaks and unscheduled DNA synthesis in rat hepatocytes in vitro. Neither chromosomal breakage nor aneuploidy was induced in Drosophila. PCB mixtures did not induce SOS repair and were not mutagenic to bacteria [ref: 24]. 2, 2', induced DNA strand breaks in mouse cells in vitro. 2, 4, 5, but not 3, 4, 5, inhibited intercellular communication in Chinese hamster V79 cells. Purified 2, 4, 2', and 3, 4, 3', and 2, 4, 6, were not mutagenic to bacteria [ref: 24]. Overall evaluation Polychlorinated biphenyls are probably carcinogenic to humans Group 2A ; . He old man had come to the end of his days. Not wanting to end it all with 2 weeks of misery in the hospital, the old man and his family had opted for him to die at home in the arms of hospice care givers. The lights were dim in the bedroom, and the family, grim, some weeping, clustered in the corner. I sat on the side of the bed looking down on him. With his bony weathered hand, he motioned to me to draw near. I leaned over; he motioned closer. With my ear near his mouth he said one word and died. "No! What do you mean `no, ' you old son-of-a." I thought. As I closed his eyes I noted a twinkle and a faint smile on his lifeless lips. The old man had taken to his grave all of his secret mushroom hunting haunts. "No" meant he was not sharing with me, or anyone else for that matter, the places where the morels grow. For years the old man would come to my office with a grocery sack filled with the cone-shaped, sponge-like mushroom. In turn, he took home a grocery sack of drug samples to treat his blood pressure and diabetes. Though I was sorely tempted, I never asked him where he found his morels. That would have been a violation of outdoorsman etiquette. But over time I pried, and he tutored me, bit by bit, in the lore of mushroom hunting. The time to hunt morels is when the oak leaves are the size of a mouse's ear. A more scientific approach is 2 weeks after the last average frost. Every morel he collected he held to his nose and deeply sniffed its scent!

David M Safley, Paul G Jones, A M Borkon, John A Spertus. Mid-America Heart Institute, Saint Luke's Hospital, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, Kansas City, MO BACKGROUND: Multiple observational databases have defined previous Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery CABG ; as one of the strongest predictors of perioperative CABG mortality. Evidence is needed to demonstrate that the benefits of repeat CABG in terms of patients health status justify these risks. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A single center prospective registry enrolled 690 consecutive patients undergoing CABG who completed the Seattle Angina Questionnaire SAQ ; at baseline and 1 year. 62 9% ; were repeat CAB. Multivariate linear regression analyses of changes in SAQ Physical Limitation SAQ-PL ; , Angina Frequency SAQ-AF ; and Quality of Life SAQ-QoL ; scores were performed with the following independent variables: age, sex, diabetes, past myocardial infarction, clinical setting, ejection fraction, beta-blocker use, and number of diseased vessels. RESULTS: Patients undergoing repeat CABG had lower EF 43.2% vs. 48.1%, p 0.005 ; , a higher rate of past MI 61.3% vs. 38.1%, p 0.001 ; , and worse baseline health status SAQ-PL and SAQ-AF scores 57 -28.6 vs. 68.3 -26.4, p 0.003 and 59.7 -30.8 vs. 72.1 -24.2, p 0.001 respectively ; . Patients undergoing repeat CABG had significant improvements in physical function, angina frequency, and quality of life one year later. These changes were equal to or greater than those undergoing their first CABG SAQ-PL 25.3 -26.7 vs. 19.6 -27.0; p 0.30; SAQ-AF 34.8 -39.6 vs. 25.0 -24.1; p 0.03; and SAQ-QoL 33.7 -24 vs. 34.5 -24.6; p 0.87 ; . As expected, 12-month mortality was higher in the repeat CABG group 14.5% vs. 6.1%, p 0.03 ; . CONCLUSIONS: Although associated with higher 1-year mortality, repeat CABG is as effective as first CABG in alleviating angina, decreasing physical limitations, and improving quality of life as measured by the SAQ.
No abraxane patients experienced severe hypersensitivity reactions.
Abraxane is a little bit more effective and a little bit easier to tolerate than taxol ; but it is certainly not a home run, said dr.

Design, which would tend to minimize the between-women differences in values for both indices of ovarian blood flow. Similarly, a longitudinal study of blood flow changes in the uterus and ovarian vasculature of patients undergoing IVF and embryo transfer revealed that the maximum PSV recorded from a study of both ovaries in each subject before oocyte recovery was similar in women who subsequently became pregnant to those who did not Tekay et aL, 1995 ; . We have attempted to study the relationship between follicular blood flow and the production of morphologically normal embryos in more detail. Accordingly, the protocol was designed to study individual follicles, oocytes and preimplantation embryos. Patients were selected who had a limited number of developing follicles, to facilitate the technical difficulty of measuring the indices of blood flow and relating each oocyte recovered to the appropriate follicle of origin. The embryologist was unaware of the ultrasonographer's findings prior to embryo transfer. The oocyte recovery rate 81% ; was consistent with our reported experience Waterstone and Parsons, 1992 ; . The selection of patients who had a limited number of developing follicles also provided a useful working range for all indices of blood flow. The outcome measures used in our study did not involve the number of embryos transferred to the uterus, or the variable role of endometrial factors involved in implantation. We do not know if the approach could be applied to the evaluation of ovaries with more than six follicles, or what the results would have been if the more elaborate scoring system of Veeck 1988 ; had been used to describe oocyte and preimplantation embryo status. The results of our study immediately before follicle aspiration showed that there was a significant relationship between follicular PSV but not PI ; and the ability to recover an oocyte, and the subsequent production of morphologically normal embryos. The findings are consistent with previous studies on the relationship between PSV and PI in unstimulated ovaries and the times of follicular rupture, i.e. presumed ovulation Campbell et aL, 1993 ; and the luteinizing hormone surge Sladkevicius etal., 1993 ; . The relationship between ultrasound indices of follicular blood flow and the onset of atresia during spontaneous ovarian cycles is unknown. The consistent finding of an increase in the maximum follicular blood velocity prior to rupture without an associated decrease in indices of impedance may reflect the presence of spatially distributed biochemical processes within the pre-ovulatory follicle. The current findings are consistent with some studies on the association between oxygen tension, ATP concentration and embryo development Fischer et aL, 1992; Van Blerkom et aL, 1995 ; . There is convincing evidence, however, that the formation of reactive oxygen species might have a regulatory effect on foUiculogenesis and ovulation Behrman et al., 1993 ; and inhibit embryogenesis in vitro Johnson and Nasr-Esfahani, 1993 ; . In addition, there may be an interesting relationship between low blood velocity and the development of a luteinized unruptured follicle Zaidi et aL, 1995 ; . The data from the present study may have use in the future management of some patients being treated by IVF and embryo transfer. The knowledge that 72% of follicles with a PSV 3 s 10 can lead to the production of a grade I or II.

UNESCO-PROAP has been engaged in a series of initiatives to promote the EFA agenda with particular reference to the Dakar Framework of Action. Included among the activities are research studies to identify and disseminate innovative initiatives or best practices, and pilot interventions in the area of NFE for income generation leading to poverty alleviation. The present study, sponsored by UNESCO-PROAP in several countries of the Asia-Pacific region, seeks to document such innovative initiatives and to analyze best practices. Objectives of the study The general objective of the present study is to identify and examine innovative aspects of NFE programmes having demonstrated potential and scope for poverty alleviation through income generation. 58 Specifically, the study has sought to: 1. Identify the scope and the role of NFE contributing to income generation. 2. Identify innovative approaches of NFE linked to income generation. 3. Assess the impact of pilot experimental income generating programmes IGPs ; under NFE as a useful contribution to human resource development. 4. Assess the impact of IGPs on greater participation in NFE. 5. Make policy recommendations to build up essential links between NFE and IGPs. 6. Suggest measures for replicating effective NFE programmes with particular focus on income generation and poverty alleviation.
